Ruud Gullit and Paolo Maldini joining the 11th Annual Match Against PovertyFeb 28, 2014
Geneva – Ruud Gullit and Paolo Maldini are among the personalities who confirmed they will join Ronaldo and Zinédine Zidane at the 11th Annual Match Against Poverty on March 4 at the STADE DE SUISSE National Stadium in Bern, Switzerland.
Football legend Ruud Gullit has accepted the challenge to guide the team of Ronaldo and Zidane against BSC Young Boys. The Dutchman is thrilled to be able to contribute to such a noble cause and calls for public support.
“It is a privilege and a challenge to steer a team with such great world football names. We would like to count on a massive public presence to see us playing and help us support the people of the Philippines”.
As a player Gullit stood out by representing 2 of the 3 major Dutch clubs - Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. Later he formed the historical forward line with Van Basten and Frank Rijkaard at AC Milan and was a player and a coach for F.C. Chelsea.
The eternal captain of AC Milan, Paolo Maldini guaranteed he will be present at the Stade de Suisse.
“I was very pleased with the invitation I received. I played as a defender throughout all my career and now I'm ready to defend the people of the Philippines in the fight against poverty.”, says Maldini, regarded to be one of the greatest defenders of all time.
“Bern has a large Italian community and I expect to move my compatriots in favor of such a noble cause as the reconstruction of the Philippines is. Maldini received the Best Defender trophy at the UEFA Club Football Awards at the age of 39.

Former and present BSC Young Boys players will comprise the Young Boys & Friends team. The team will be led by former Swiss international players Stéphane Chapuisat and Hakan Yakin. The Italian Pierluigi Collina will be the referee of the match.
Proceeds from the Match will support recovery efforts in the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms on record.
The Match against Poverty will be televised globally in more than 50 countries around the world.
